It can be difficult trying to reduce your carbon footprint. But if you own some open land, there’s a way to make it much easier: a wind turbine generator system. But before you run out and buy one to power your house with the wind, there are a few things you need to know. You should know, first and foremost, how a wind turbine generator system works; we’ll also inform you about how having one of these works with your electric company and the options you’ll have when looking to buy a wind turbine generator system.
How does a wind turbine generator system work? It converts the kinetic energy of the wind into electric power, which can be stored in a battery bank or supplied directly to the house for immediate use. The system also includes an inverter that converts DC power (the kinetic energy of the wind) to AC power (what you need for appliances).
But what happens if you need more power than the wind turbine generator is giving you? Easy: just draw more power from the electric company. And what happens if you generate more power than you need? Talk to your electric company again, because you can sell that power back to the company, and they can redistribute it for use elsewhere.
There are a lot of choices for wind turbine generator systems. Mostly, you need to worry about the size of the wind turbine generator, and I don’t mean how tall it is. For example, a wind turbine generator system rated at 10kW can generate about 10,000 kWh per year at an average wind speed of 12mph. This would be enough for some homes, but not for others, so make sure you figure out how much power you need – and how much you want to generate with your wind turbine.
Wind turbine generator systems are great for reducing your reliance on fossil fuels. They take the power of the wind and turn on your lights, refrigerator, and waffle iron. They don’t have to cover all of your power needs, but if they do, you can actually make money with them. And there is a variety available.
Great stuff, enjoyed reading about the wind turbine generator learnt a few things!
What a beautiful site, I am so excited that people are realising the value of sustainable energy and using our resources wisely. May there be much more of a ground swell of interest and actions in this arena.
Keep us the good work.
Thankyou for your kind response. Stay tuned for lots more goodies…
We have heaps more to learn together, glad that you take an interest in the health of the planets future.
GREAT SOURCE OF INFORMATION WE LIVE ON 5 ACRES WOULD BE GREAT TO BE ABLE TO HAVE OUR OWN TURBINE FREE POWER
Good information. I’ll keep coming back to see what else is added.
Kim, we are so happy you are discovering new ways to live green through our website. Stay cool Cheers The Admin Team
Fantastic site…. I have been thinking for a while about using wind energy on my ten acres, and just reading this article has given me a little boost to get doing and not just thinking!!! Thanks girls so much!!!!
Regards , Robbie
Hey Robyn Elizabeth, what a buzz that you have found our site and like the ideas we are presenting. We see so much potential in harnessing the natural powers of the earth through wind and water. We will be posting more articles on wind power soon so check in from time to time, and thanks for taking the time to comment : Cheers from The Ecopower team
